Cheering spectators help athletes to keep going. Be prepared to watch runners on race day with these helpful hints.
Endurance athletes have worked hard to complete their goal. They are draining themselves of all energy. Spectators just need to grab their sunglasses, sunscreen and a couple of snacks. But they can do more to encourage the runners along the way. In fact, spectators should cheer for everyone: call out the names on the shirts and bibs as they run by - even if they are strangers. Every little bit of encouragement helps. Here's how to be in a great position to see runners at the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend event: The Ticket and Transportation Center at Magic KingdomThis is at about mile 4.5 for the half marathon and mile 8.5 for the marathon. Viewers will need to park at Magic Kingdom and walk towards the Ticket and Transportation Center. Just before the tunnel is a great spot for picture taking. Be sure to stay on the inside of the loop if there are plans to go to another viewing location. From this location spectators can also walk across to the west side of the parking lot and see half marathon racers on their way back at about mile 8 and marathon runners at mile 13. Main Street in Magic KingdomThis is at about mile 5.5 for the half marathon and mile 10.5 for the marathon. Allow plenty of time to take transportation to the theme park and get inside to a good viewing location. Front Entrance at Animal KingdomThis is at about mile 18 for marathon viewing. Park at Animal Kingdom and walk to the main entrance. Park admission is not necessary as the racers will come right by Rainforest Cafe. EPCOT Finish AreaDrivers are cautioned to expect congestion at the gates of Epcot, which is just opening at the time many runners will be crossing the finish line. Viewers can also take the monorail transportation to Epcot. There are bleachers (reserved for those who pay) near the finish line and spectators can watch nearby. Or move towards the trees where the racers will exit Epcot. Another great viewing location is along the barriers, past the finish line, where spectators just might catch glimpse of athletes receiving their medals. Online ToolsThe Disney marathon website has online tools designed to help map out the perfect viewing route. Allow racers plenty of time after they finish before giving them a congratulatory hug. They will want to get a drink and snack, turn in their timing chip, receive their medal, have their picture taken and pick up their bag. They may even need to get some ice or a quick massage. After this, plan to meet them in the family reunion area. Source: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training
